Crafting A Short Story
Recently, I had the chance to record a live class for my chapter of Sisters in Crime. This is my first time teaching a class online, and a writing class. I’ve taught group classes before, mostly in photography, so this was a real treat.
I’m passionate about the art of telling a story, and I think that the relative brevity of a short story can work in your favor when you’re writing. I use short stories as tools to character development, for experimentation in different styles and genres and voice, and of course, as a chance to get my work published. If you watch this program, please scroll up to the top of the chat, so you can access the links and resources that are on my ending slides. The writing prompt at the very end is also in the chat.
I don’t discuss it much in this presentation, but I’m fairly certain that the transition from young adult novels to adult work was paved by short stories and novellas that appealed to me as a grew into different types of reading. Short stories play such an important role, and I sincerely hope that if you’re writing, you consider penning a short story or two, just to see how versatile the shorter structure can be.
